The Calgary Board of education is committed to providing students and staff with a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. With this in mind, the CBE has created a system-wide Student Code of Conduct (Administrative Regulation 6005) with input from students, parents and CBE employees. The code of conduct will apply to all CBE schools. All CBE students are expected to abide by the system regulation. Attached is the Student Code of Conduct.

Students will be guided by all staff to adhere to classroom, school and CBE Code of Conduct expectations. We ask that behaviours are ‘above the line’ and adhere to ensuring the right of all of our students to learn. When behaviours break the code of conduct and are below the line, students will be redirected by staff or sent to the office.

What happens in the office when there is a student conflict/incident?

  • Student comes in to the office and fills out a reset form (what happened and what might happen next time). This is teaching and learning how to be part of a community.
    - K – 4 – 4 Footprint form (*attached at end of this document)
    - 5 – 9 – Reset form (*attached at end of this document)
  • Admin member invites child in to talk together (regulate, relate, then reason) and reviews what happened, using the form the child has filled out and the conversation held.
    - What happened before the incident (where were you)?
    - What happened during the incident?
    - What happened after?
    - What would the other person(s) say about what happened?
    - What could you do differently to avoid the incident?
  • Students meet individually with admin to discuss what happened and what could happen differently. Next best steps are also discussed.
  • If there is more than one student, each student speaks with admin separately
  • When there is a common story, admin may then work with both students together.
  • Apologies are encouraged but not enforced.
  • When accepting apology we encourage students to respond with:
    - Thank you, please do not do XXX again.
    - I accept your apology, please do not do XXX again.
  • Students review the CBE Student Code of Conduct to identify which areas were broken
  • Admin and student(s) fill out a Student Discipline Contract outlining Code of Conduct Areas broken and next best steps to support the child so teaching and learning is not interrupted
  • Admin connects with class teacher, class teacher joins meeting to find a way to welcome the child back into their classroom
  • Parents are contacted as necessary (not all meetings require parent calls / emails)
